CONCEPTUAL FIT

THE SMITH HOUSE

The Smith Family has commissioned you to design an addition to their house on the shore of Long Island Sound. The original house, designed in 1965 by architect Richard Meier, has been widely published and is internationally known. Unfortunately, the Owners needs have change since the original design, thereby warranting this architectural intervention. The Owner specifically request that the integrity of the original design be respected, yet the new addition should have its own presence.

The client is a family of three, with another child on the way.  The oldest child is 8-years old and the wife and husband are both artists.  Both the wife and the husband are moved by the simplicity and basic concepts that were applied to the design of their home.  The location of the house and its overlooking views of the water serve as inspiration and create an atmosphere of vast openness and clarity that the clients enjoy and find perfect for focusing and coming up with their very best work.

The news of the child on the way led them to the decision to remodel and create a large master suite for themselves and leave their existing bedroom to their 8-year-old son, this is a very important addition to them, they feel that they don’t have a bedroom that is special enough in regards to the rest of the home, and they want their new bedroom to remain private, but are hoping to open it up, without totally losing their privacy.  Also one of the couple’s issues with their current home is the lack of a family room which they are excited to add, which they hope to keep as a private and cozy place in contrast to the rest of the home.

A special request of the Father is that an exercise room far away from the bedroom, for his wife, as her morning burpees wake him from his sleep, which he values very much.  Finally, the couple is looking to add a balcony and outdoor studio to the home which they are hoping to exhibit the same feel that the living room gives them upon entry to their home. They plan to spend a lot of time there so this addition is very important to them.
